"I don't know shit about music. But if I do it's because I read it in Allen Van Wert's book."
"I have only ever had one guitar lesson in my entire life, and I took it from Allen Van Wert."
At about 100 pages in, I was reading a chapter on the diminished scale, and I realized that I understood everything the author was saying. My mind wasn't wandering. He related everything back to triads and the major scale, and it dawned on me that I had absorbed everything he said about triads and the major scale. As a self taught guitarist whose eyes glazed over at anything more complex than a power chord, this was life changing.

Real Reviews from Real Musicians
"Absolutely amazing book. Really helps simplify a lot of concepts. Even as a professional musician with a vast understanding of theory, this book really helped me teach concepts easier to students. Plus a lot of the concepts just make more sense. 100/10 book."
"As a lifelong musician who often relied on intuition rather than strict rules, I found the straightforward language refreshing. Many theory books drown you in needless details and tend to overwhelm beginners. This book proves you can teach music theory in the most basic and effective manner by focusing on fundamental concepts and clear explanations, making it accessible for learners of all levels."
"Everything about this book is awesome, finally someone has demystified music theory so anyone can understand it, I can't recommend this book highly enough, Allen Van Wert is one of the best teachers out there."
"Awesome book. It definitely shed some light on some subjects that always confused me from previous teachers. It has shifted my view on what to really practice to understand what is really going on with music instead of running up and down modes or pentatonic shapes."
"I have been making music for 30 years, have 5 studio albums, have written for Nashville acts and frankly thought I had a solid grasp on theory. This book has flipped it all on its head and has inspired me anew. This is the best theory book out there!"
"This is, by far, one of THE BEST books about music theory I have ever read! I've been a musician for over 40 years and it's definitely helped me, not only with the fundamentals, but the more challenging aspects in understanding how music works!!"
"I have tried multiple times through decades to get a grasp on music theory. Books, YouTube videos, etc. Nothing ever clicked the way this book does. Allen has not only taken the BS out of traditional theory, he has made it simpler to grasp. Each section leads to questions answered by the next section."
"I've been playing guitar for 40 years, and this is the 2nd book I've ever found that explains theory in terms that don't sound like advanced calculus at NASA."
"I learned more in the first 50 pages of this book than I did in all of my school music classes. My guitar tech who has been playing for 30 years says I am past his knowledge in music theory and my friend who grew up in marching band said I have surpassed his theory knowledge as well. This book is an absolute game changer."
"I love the depth of information and the way he approaches the topic while not getting bogged down in details from traditional music theory learning material. I had previously been in band in Middle and High school, but it never really clicked with me as much as I wish it would have. This book unlocked that for me."
"Outstanding shipping and customer service. This book is amazing and needs to be in every music school, and universities. Great work sir!"
"I have played for years... taken courses... lessons... but THIS! This made me better in 24hrs or by page 40. BUY ONE! You won't regret it."
"I love this book so much! As somebody with ADHD I've always had a really hard time sitting down and learning the nuts and bolts of music theory, despite being a professional entertainer for over 20 years. Alan really breaks down the entire concept of music theory and explains very difficult theories in a way that are very easy to understand. You'll save yourself 20 years of frustration!"
"I'm genuinely enjoying using this book as someone with ADHD who has been putting off learning music theory for 30 years."
"This book helped me understand concepts that have confused me for decades. Wish I read this a long time ago. It's like I finally found the right music teacher who explained it in a way that made sense to me."
"I too am a classically/jazz trained musician proficient in saxophone, guitar, and piano. Allen's knowledge, however, honestly eclipses my own. This book is tremendous and will help anyone (beginners too) grow!"
"This is exactly what I needed and was looking for. I'm classically trained and I know all the music theory stuff, keyword THEORY, this book simplifies and actually shows you how and when to use it."
"I've been playing guitar for 25 years and never made it past learning by ear or tab. Allen's approach to music theory is scientific, and cuts through the fog like a laser beam. I think anyone who enjoys music to the highly trained musician ALL have something to gain from reading these pages."
"I have been playing guitar around 35 yrs. This book is a great alternative over traditional music theory. It's not just for guitarists — it's for everyone. It eliminates a multitude of unnecessary jargon traditional theory offers and gives you a more simplified USEFUL understanding of music."
Look Inside the Book

How This Book Gets Made
100% Human Created. The cover is an original oil painting by Allen Van Wert, and every illustration inside the book is hand drawn by him or his daughter Rylie. The 150+ guitar and piano diagrams were handmade in Photoshop one by one. No AI was used in the creation of this book. The text traces back to first versions written on paper in 1993 and a text document dated 2013 on Allen's old computer. The book was many dedicated and passionate years in the making, but this specific format took about two years to produce using Adobe InDesign.
Allen argued with the printing company back and forth numerous times to get them to print the ink slightly lighter on a natural, slightly aged paper. Music theory is already stress inducing for a lot of people and he wanted it to be easy on the eyes and easy on the brain. The pages are not the typical high-contrast bleached whites you find in most books. They are natural, better for the environment, and use less of the tree to achieve this calming look. Even the specific colors chosen for the cover art are deliberate, selected to calm and inspire. More thought than you would ever expect went into every single detail of this book. This is not about selling books. This is his legacy and life's work.
Allen goes to the post office every single day with his dog Martin to personally drop off every order so your book ships on time. No warehouse. No fulfillment center. Every copy is handled by the author himself.
Allen's daughter Lydian, named after the Lydian mode, moved in with him after some really difficult life events. She has since become his right hand, helping pack and ship books, moderate the Discord community, and maintain the website. When she isn't lifting weights or complaining about her dad's diet or how annoying he is or how low he prices the books, she is preparing book orders. This is a family operation built on sarcasm, resilience, and a shared belief in what this book means to people.

Private Discord Access
Every copy of The Science of Music comes with access to a private Discord community where readers connect, share progress, and discuss the material together. It's not just a book, it's a community of musicians all learning the same way.
Allen is active in the Discord and genuinely loves helping readers work through concepts. If you're stuck on a chapter, have a question about modes, or just want feedback on how you're applying the theory, you can ask him directly. Teaching is what drives him, and he's there because he wants to be, not because he has to be.

Advancing Music Theory
The Van Wert Cognitive-Weighting Theory of Modality
Allen Van Wert's work goes beyond a new way to teach. It introduces original findings that reshape how music theory is configured. His formal disclosure, The Van Wert Cognitive-Weighting Theory of Modality, is the first to precisely define what modes are to the human brain, offering a scientific framework for understanding the perception of tonal centers and modal character.
This research corrects longstanding flaws in traditional music theory, including the historical mistake of the minor scale designation, and removes centuries of unnecessary complexity. The result is a theory that is universally accurate across all genres, as any true science should be.
