I always felt music theory should have been more of a science. My unique findings about how modes actually work revealed fundamental misunderstandings we had in traditional theory. This allowed me to correct those issues, remove the complexity and redundancy. This is new music theory without all the bullshit. Great for ear players to finally bridge the gap in their understanding and add depth and confidence.

At about 100 pages in, I was reading a chapter on the diminished scale, and I realized that I understood everything the author was saying. My mind wasn't wandering. He related everything back to triads and the major scale, and it dawned on me that I had absorbed everything he said about triads and the major scale. As a self taught guitarist whose eyes glazed over at anything more complex than a power chord, this was life changing.

How This Book Gets Made

Created by Human Brain, Not AI

100% Human Created. The cover is an original oil painting by Allen Van Wert, and every illustration inside the book is hand drawn by him or his daughter Rylie. The 150+ guitar and piano diagrams were handmade in Photoshop one by one. No AI was used in the creation of this book. The text traces back to first versions written on paper in 1993 and a text document dated 2013 on Allen's old computer. The book was many dedicated and passionate years in the making, but this specific format took about two years to produce using Adobe InDesign.

Allen Van Wert hand painting the oil cover art Hand drawn illustrations from the book

Allen argued with the printing company back and forth numerous times to get them to print the ink slightly lighter on a natural, slightly aged paper. Music theory is already stress inducing for a lot of people and he wanted it to be easy on the eyes and easy on the brain. The pages are not the typical high-contrast bleached whites you find in most books. They are natural, better for the environment, and use less of the tree to achieve this calming look. Even the specific colors chosen for the cover art are deliberate, selected to calm and inspire. More thought than you would ever expect went into every single detail of this book. This is not about selling books. This is his legacy and life's work.

Bins of books at the post office ready to ship Allen and his dog Martin on the way to the post office

Allen goes to the post office every single day with his dog Martin to personally drop off every order so your book ships on time. No warehouse. No fulfillment center. Every copy is handled by the author himself.

Allen's daughter Lydian, named after the Lydian mode, moved in with him after some really difficult life events. She has since become his right hand, helping pack and ship books, moderate the Discord community, and maintain the website. When she isn't lifting weights or complaining about her dad's diet or how annoying he is or how low he prices the books, she is preparing book orders. This is a family operation built on sarcasm, resilience, and a shared belief in what this book means to people.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Science of Music" is designed for all levels, from beginners to seasoned musicians. The book breaks down complex concepts into easy-to-understand steps, making it accessible for those who have struggled with traditional music theory. It starts from the easiest place you can and gradually adds to that in a logical way with worksheets. Chris Adler of Megadeth and Lamb Of God states- "Whether you are a seasoned musician or just starting your journey, Allen's insights will enrich your understanding and appreciation of music.
This book challenges and aims to correct flaws in traditional music theory. It focuses on the "why" behind music, teaching the cause of musical events rather than just memorizing a list of effects and naming them over and over. One of the key differences is its examination of why the minor scale was a historical mistake in music theory. It is also the first book to exactly identify and define what modes are to a human brain and his findings have changed how music theory is configured. It clarifies by removing unnecessary and incorrect information from centuries old music theory.
The title reflects the book's approach to treating music theory as a science. It aims to present a more accurate representation of the reality of how music works, moving away from historical conventions of classical and jazz composers. Which are just specific trends of specific times. Instead, it is not only a much more practical look at music theory but is also more universally accurate, as science should be. No more exceptions or outliers to faulty rulesets of the past. It is for any genre due to this.
No. The book contains very little standard notation, as it focuses on the practical application of theory for creating and understanding music. This also makes it particularly helpful for musicians who play by ear and intuition. If you were to take a creative writing course you wouldn't be tested on spelling. It is more accessible this way.
The book covers a wide range of topics, including a comprehensive reference section of every possible chord and the scales they belong to. It also offers a new way to understand modes. The goal is to provide musicians with every possible musical option for composition and improvisation. Overall, it gives a more exact definition to all of the elements needed to understand how music works.
Yes, the book features a foreword by Chris Adler (Lamb of God, Megadeth). It also has endorsements from Ron "Bumblefoot" Thal (Guns N' Roses, Asia) and Grammy-winning producer GreazyWil among others. It has also recieved acclaim from members of Steve Miller Band, Wooten Brothers, Sabriana Carpenter, Dua Lipa and was recently purchased by three time grammy award winner Darius Rucker.

Advancing Music Theory

Formal Scientific Disclosure

The Van Wert Cognitive-Weighting Theory of Modality

Allen Van Wert's work goes beyond a new way to teach. It introduces original findings that reshape how music theory is configured. His formal disclosure, The Van Wert Cognitive-Weighting Theory of Modality, is the first to precisely define what modes are to the human brain, offering a scientific framework for understanding the perception of tonal centers and modal character.

This research corrects longstanding flaws in traditional music theory, including the historical mistake of the minor scale designation, and removes centuries of unnecessary complexity. The result is a theory that is universally accurate across all genres, as any true science should be.

Official Press Release

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Independent Author Disrupts Music Education: "The Science of Music" Hits #1 Best Seller on Amazon and Dominates TikTok

A new, purely logical approach to music education has struck a massive chord with the public and the highest levels of the music industry. The Science of Music, an independently published guidebook by professional guitarist Allen Van Wert, has officially claimed the #1 Best Seller spot in both the Music Theory and Music Reference categories on Amazon. The book features a foreword by Grammy-winning drummer Chris Adler of Lamb of God and Megadeth, who also actively interacts with the community during Van Wert's live educational streams. It also holds official endorsements from Platinum-selling artists like Jason Null of Saving Abel, who is one of Van Wert's own guitar students, and Greasy Wil, the Grammy-winning producer for Killer Mike who has also worked with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Muse, and Justin Bieber.

The book's unprecedented success extends far beyond traditional retail, surpassing 20,000 total copies sold worldwide. Driven by Van Wert's highly engaging sci-fi-themed educational videos, it has moved over 13,000 physical copies on TikTok Shop to become the platform's best-selling music theory book. The video series itself has become a destination for high-level musical instruction, recently featuring a guest episode with Breaking Benjamin drummer Chad Szeliga breaking down linear drumming. High-profile artists are actively taking notice. Ron Thal of Guns N' Roses shared the book's release directly with his fanbase. Three-time Grammy winner Darius Rucker recently purchased a signed copy, and global superstar Michael Bublé recently followed the TikTok account and has tuned into the live broadcasts.

Traditional music theory often relies on 17th-century conventions. This forces students to memorize endless exceptions and read standard notation before playing a single note. The Science of Music completely dismantles this outdated system. It treats music as a science grounded in facts and logical patterns rather than a list of historical suggestions. This provides a bridge to total creative confidence for complete beginners and touring professionals alike.

"Stop memorizing the effects and finally understand the causes," says Van Wert, who has instructed over three million students globally through platforms like JamPlay and TrueFire and worked alongside members of Billy Idol, Megadeth, Breaking Benjamin, Black Label Society, Taking Back Sunday, and Atreyu. "For the first time, this book introduces the Cognitive-Weighting Theory of Modality. This is a predictive model that defines modes not through traditional theory, but as the brain's involuntary act of mapping a tonal center."
