When I was in my final year of high school I took AP Music Theory. The teacher, bless her soul, was also the choir teacher and one of the best I ever had, at least when it came to choir. For Theory, she was dead set on getting us to pass the test more than she was on making sure we knew actual theory. We used books that were twenty years out of date as reference, while being drilled on intervals, ear tests, transcriptions, the works. When we got to modes, she skipped them as it wasn’t on the test, but the bit she did teach was that modes only worked as part of the C Major scale as each mode name somehow matched up to the note it started on. I got a 5 on the test and yet, honestly, I remembered almost nothing of the class afterward or even now, twenty years later. If I hadn’t already been engrossed in music for ten years before that class, I doubt I’d even remember the foundation. And then I came upon this book. This book is simplified all the way down to the barest of bones. All the terms shoved down your throat in other theory books are either gone, or described in such simple ways they actually make sense. I’m remembering things I forgot I’d forgotten, despite having composed music for twenty years after the aforementioned Theory class. And it makes sense now! One set of lessons ties into the next, and progresses at a pace that is not overwhelming in the slightest. This is honestly the refresher I’ve been looking for all my life. I especially love that the author has included both written and visual methods of learning, as well as worksheets and quizzes to test and practice what you just learned in a way that actually works and makes you think. I highly recommend this book, for new musicians, and even old hats like me who never got to truly understand it all but kept going anyway. This book is EXACTLY what we need.
It starts at the beginning for the newest people learning about theory. I really like how it’s organized and each concept is right to the point. He also is very aware of the more confusing concepts and walks you though these areas like someone who has experience teaching this stuff. If you’re a musician, even an amateur musician, you should have a book on theory and this is a great choice. Without seeing all the books ever written about theory, I can’t say that this is the best theory book ever written, but it could be. It’s the best one I’ve seen in 40 years of playing.
I have tried multiple times through decades to get a grasp on music theory. Books, YouTube videos, etc. Nothing ever clicked the way this book does. Allen has not only taken the BS out of traditional theory, he has made it simpler to grasp. Each section leads to questions answered by the next section and the worksheets at the end of each challenge you to actually understand what you just read. I can’t believe the amount of knowledge I have picked up and I’m not even through the whole book yet.
This is a magnificent practical guide to learning music theory. Allen teaches in a way that applies common sense. I’ve been a musician for over 20 years and I enjoyed reviewing some things and also learned much more. One of the best music books I have ever read. I will definitely be referencing the book over and over again.
I learned more in the first 50 pages of this book than I did in all of my school music classes. My guitar tech who has been playing for 30 years says I am past his knowledge in music theory and my friend who grew up in marching band said I have surpassed his theory knowledge as well. This book is an absolute game changer.
I love this book so much! as somebody with ADHD I’ve always had a really hard time sitting down and learning the nuts and bolts of music theory, despite being a professional entertainer for over 20 years. Alan really breaks down the entire concept of music theory and explains very difficult theories in a way that are very easy to understand. I would highly suggest it to anybody that is in school for music. You’ll save yourself 20 years of frustration!

My initial thoughts so far are this book is great! It’s refined but simple. I’ve already coached some of my bandmates on music theory because I was able to retain and digest a topic in the music structure section. This book has excellent intentions, but it’s not really beginner friendly as it hits the ground running. If I didn’t already have 20 years experience, I would’ve been lost. One benefit for experienced musicians is that it will create new/different recall pathways.
I’ve been playing guitar for 25 years and never made it past learning by ear or tab. Allens approach to music theory is scientific, and cuts through the fog like a laser beam. I think anyone who enjoys music to the highly trained musician ALL have something to gain from reading these pages. Amazing.

Easy to understand after browsing the whole book. It is written in a logical fashion even if you musical experience. It didn't rewrite I knew, it helped reinforce and clear up some hard to remember parts like the circle of 5ths. It won't teach you if you're not ready to do work and learn. Use it while you practice.

Amazing perspective on theory! You need to understand this is a perspective on theory and a great way to conceptualize. It doesn’t make any other explanation of theory incorrect. But at the same time, it very much simplifies the process of understanding what fits and what your options are. 10/10
Still working thru but just based on what I’ve read it’s easy going and full of easy to consume yet hardcore music knowledge. Highly recommend for anybody who is just learning about music creation or somebody who doesn’t have the analytical music portion of their psyche quite unlocked to their wants

Started playing in 2010 stopped 2014. Got back into it 2018. 2022 I became obsessed with guitar and within First 10 minutes of reading and I learned something new that’s tremendously improved the amount of notes I can add or remove.

Great book that helps you understand music and why certain things scratch the back of your brain. It has diagrams and work assignments that actually make you feel like you're improving even without even picking up an instrument.

I listened to Allen Speak many times on TikTok and I realized he’s a musical genius. I too am a classically/jazz trained musician proficient in saxophone, guitar, and piano. Allen’s knowledge, however, honestly eclipses is my own. This book is tremendous and will help anyone (beginners too) grow!

As a drummer since 2002 who didn’t learn to fully read music, I am truly amazed at how well written this book is, and how easy it makes everything to understand. The illustrations are fantastic and I’m going to let my daughter read this as well since we have so many instruments around the house.

At the beginning of my journey, I realized what Allen obviously realized as well. Music theory is broken and convoluted at best. Im 20 years in now. Ive read a total of 30 pages and I can already tell this book is the key to seeing how to really play music. This knowledge makes absolute sense.
As someone who has played for many years, this book is an eye opener. It really explains things very logically while remaining relevant to the more traditional approach to music theory. Allen applies logic and simple reasoning to show the reader how to understand theory.

Allen did an excellent job of simplifying as well as clarifying music theory for real life application. I’ve studied music theory for years, but as a neuro-divergent a lot of things just didn’t make sense. The Science of Music removes all the “static” traditional theory has.

This is a great book for breaking down how to make sense of a lot of the music theory examples and because the author comes at it from my guitarist perspective, it’s not limited to the keyboard or old school theory examples. Really well done. I’m enjoying my read through.

I am quickly consuming this incredible book that uses an honest and simple method of explaining music theory in a way that is easy to understand. I'm learning about traditional theory, but given tools that make understanding and applying it way easier than the traditional way. It's a cheat code.
